from farm to cup – the science of coffee

I have been listening to a 52 minute podcast from 2008 by Andrea Lily who is a scientist covering the compleixties of a great coffee cup from farm, through sorting, drying, roasting and finally cupping that perfect cup of espresso. Coffee is amazing! It was discovered in Yemen around 2000 years ago originally coming from Ethiopia. There are two main varieties of coffee plant: Arabica and Robusta and they only grow around the equator. There are so many factors that contribute to a great or terrible cup of coffee. Some of those are: the person preparing the coffee, the technology used, and the presentation. However the complexities start with the plant you use, where you grow the plant, the way you pick and dry the coffee, transportation, roasting and many more. This podcast is a comprehensive look at the science behind that perfect cup.
