A core competency is a specific factor that a business sees as being central to the way it, or its employees, works.

Every business has strengths and weaknesses, competitors, opportunities, threats, products are services. These change. However the core competency stays the same, usually. Google is good at search. Kodak is good at memories. Memories dont have to be on film. They can be digital. The result = Kodak survives. Kodak evolves. Kodak develops. Borders saw themselves as a book shop with a cafe. They weren’t. They were a place for experiencing ideas. They failed. Who will fill that spot?

I hope you see your business as a 4 dimensional one. I do.
